Danish SS-Obersturmbannführer Knud Børge Martinsen photographed in 1943. Martinsen joined Waffen-SS in May 1941, serving with Frikorps Danmark under Christian Frederich von Schalburg in Russia. After Schalburg’s death in June 1942, Martinsen took command of the unit and commanded it until March 1943. He was awarded the Infantry Assault Badge, the Wound Badge in Black and both classes of Iron Cross.

Danish Waffen-SS Christian Frederik von Schalburg (April 15, 1906 - June 2, 1942). Schalburg was a Danish army officer and the second commander of the Waffen-SS Free Corps Denmark. He was awarded the Iron Cross of 1st and 2nd class while serving in the Waffen-SS 'Division Wiking'. He died fighting communism on the eastern front. Loved and respected by his men, one of his soldier's even sacrificed his own life to retrieve Schalburg's corpse from the battlefield.
