In the great spacer they grow their own food (they have big gardens). In the small beamships they eat "instant food" of diverse colors, form and flavors. This food is very "filling" and is compressed/condensed. A bit of food the size of a peanut can deliver a full "meal". When Billy tried this food for the first time (while being with Asket) he took a too big "crumb" of food, and then, by chewing it (contact with saliva), it rose like dough/cake and the food flowed out of his mouth.
