Chased by Suttungr, Odin spits the mead of poetry into several vessels. Some of it accidentally goes out the other end. Illustration by the Icelandic artist Jakob Sigurðsson 1760. In Norse mythology, the Mead of Poetry is a mythical beverage that whoever 'drinks becomes a skald or scholar' to recite any information and solve any question. The drink is a vivid metaphor for poetic inspiration, often associated with Odin the god of 'possesion' via berserker rage or poetic inspiration.

Gunnlod
When the giant Suttungr, stole the mead of poetry – which makes one who drinks it wise and scholarly (skald) – Odin took it back by turning into a handsome man and taking it from Suttungr’s daughter, Gunnlod.
