The Battle of Ivry was fought on 14 March 1590, during the French Wars of Religion. The battle was a decisive victory for Henry IV of France, leading Huguenot forces against the Catholic League forces led by the Duc de Mayenne. Henry's forces were victorious and he went on to lay siege to Paris.

The battle of Courtras (October 20, 1587) saw the over-confident Catholic heavy cavalry charge from too great a distance. By the time they got to the Huguenot light cavalry their, horses were blown. Henri de Navarre had also placed a surprise amongst his cavalry--platoons of arquebusiers. This combination broke the enemy cavalry and then the infantry.
