Photograph: A selection of pewter brooches from an Anglo-Saxon jewellery hoard. Some have yellow or dark red beads in the centre. Some are decorated with twisted wire. Saxon jewellery hoard Date: 1000s Found on Cheapside near Bow Church during the excavation of a sewer in 1838, this hoard seems to be the stock of a local Saxon jeweller. In it are different types of pewter brooches, rings and beads, mostly unfinished. Some brooches are set with glass beads to imitate gems.
