On this day, March 22, 1622, the Indian Massacre broke out across the Colony of Virginia. The surprise attacks were waged by the Powhatan Confederacy and killed 347 people. They also burned houses and crops in settlements along the James River. In retaliation, the settlers raided the tribes and their crops, forcing Chief Opechancanough to negotiate. During the peace talks ceremony, the leaders of Jamestown poisoned the liquor, killing roughly 200 Powhatan. Settlers killed another 50 by hand.
