Dwight Eisenhower’s parents on their wedding day in 1888. | It is said that Dwight D. Eisenhower's mother, Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower was a woman of color. Eisenhower's maternal grandfather carried the surname of Link, there being only two Links families in the Virginia town they originated in ~ a black one and a white one. Many years ago, a black researcher discovered that Ida’s mother was from the black Links, a fact washed away in time.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower was the chief general in charge of the US forces during World War II, and later went on to be President. This photo was taken a year after victory over Axis forces in WWII. Karsh would go on to photograph Eisenhower as President and in his retirement, where he delighted in showing Karsh the oil painting that he was working on of Churchill for which he used Karsh’s portrait as a source. From Traces of Texas: Since it is his birthday and all, Dwight Eisenhower's rather remarkable 1912 West Point graduation portrait. He was a handsome, clean cut young lad! I wonder if you would have told him at that point how his life was going to end up if he would have ever believed you.


Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th President of the United States (1953-1961) and First Lady Mamie Dowd Eisenhower (1896-1979). On Valentine's Day in 1916 Eisenhower gave her a miniature of his West Point class ring to seal a formal engagement. Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower, aged 25, married Mamie Doud, aged 19, on July 1, 1916.
