What's blooming in April?
What's in bloom in April? Native plant edition! 🌸 Bloodroot blooms in March and April and the name comes from its blood-red stem that was traditionally used as dye for baskets, clothing, face paint and insect repellent. 🌼 Western skunk cabbage, also called swamp lantern, is one of the earliest blooming flowers, often poking out of the snow. It's named after its stinky smell resembling decay but this is what attracts certain pollinators. 🪻 Blue-eyed grass starts blooming at the end of April. It's a member of the iris family but unlike irises (which prefer wetlands), it grows in prairie grasslands. 🏵 Yellow trout lily is also called dogtooth violet because of its tooth-shaped root. It's quite a lovely, solitary, nodding flower.
