Vandbærerske (Water Carrying Girl) - a.k.a. "Struerpigen" (The Struer Girl)

In my hometown, Struer (Denmark) is a beautiful bronze statue, made by sculptor Anker Hoffmann and revealed on 13th July 1931. Hoffmann had made a small plaster statuette 1929, and his friend, and at that time famous author Johannes Bucholtz, applied secretly The New Carlsberg Foundation for money, which they granted, to erect the full size bronze statue. Hoffmann was actually married in 1927 with a girl from Struer. I think the sculpture is a portrait of his beautiful wife, Fro Vibeke Larsen.

This sculture by Rudolph Tegner (ca. 1912-15) has a strange resemblance to "Struerpigen" and it has the same original title "Vandbærerske". Might have inspired Hoffmann - just look at her feet, loose skirt and the posture of her arms! Tegner has made another similar sculpture only with two babies - after an amphora comes a baby...?

This sculpture "Fro" (as written on the base) is placed in Fredericia, Denmark. It is the artist's wife Fro Vibeke, born Larsen (Fro is a very unusual name). She looks a lot like "Struerpigen" - so at least my guess is, that it is the same beautiful woman born 21st April 1903 in Struer with whom he married 31. July 1927.

Picture from the moment after the unveiling of the statue 13th July 1931. Mayor Hedegaard (and just beside his knee in the background Johannes Bucholtz getting ready for his speech), and (leaving) the artist Anker Hoffmann and Mrs Vibeke Weber (representing the New Carlsberg Foundation). Mrs. Weber named the statue "Struerpigen". Around 2,000 spectators in small town Struer, at that time with 5,300 citizens, shows the importance of the event.

Her days as a fontain ended as she was placed in a small artificial lake and in new surroundings I guess in the late 1970ies? Much better without the running water, I think.

Postcard depicting "Struerpigen" from the 1930ties. As the postcard shows, at that time a part of a fountain. The author Johannes Bucholtz who alledgedly raised the money to get the sculpture to Struer, was not happy about the fountain-arrangement, but he died in 1940, and did not live to see it changed.
