Handbound books

I've been calling my tutorials "bookbinding 101" so I really should have done this particular tutorial first. I spend a substantial amount of time worrying about paper grain direction when I'm making my books. So, as far as I know, all machine-made papers have a grain direction. Expandable Pocket Binding Today's book is a mixture of envelope, book, and box. The pages are little pockets and they are secured inside a little box structure. I made the little pockets individually, although the tutorial that I saw for this idea was done with coin envelopes.

Last week I showed you what was on the work bench... the junk mail, remember? Voila, very cool journals. The covers are, obviously, covered with junk mail and other previously-used envelopes. I used scrap materials to make these books - everything was destined to be landfill (with two small exceptions). I used scraps of mat board to make the covers. The peach book has my handmade paper on the covers - which was made from paper scraps. For the blue book, I used a fabric remnant to make some book cloth for the cover (exception number one: the cloth was backed with mulberry paper and the mulberry paper was new). These are the first 4 flag books that I made. This effort was prompted by the B.E.S.T Book Swap. Our last swap was all about flag books so I had to make one. But I had never made one before. The very first one: it uses found images for the flags and the accordion, and the cover has some of my paste paper on there. There is a quote about blue skies printed on the back of the flags. Scroll in a box This is another double-rod scroll format. The scroll is permanently bound inside a box where it can be rolled up in either direction to facilitate reading. As far as I know, there is no special name for a scroll in an box like this. Similar, but fancier, boxes are sometimes used for reading or displaying Qur'an and Torah scrolls. Peter and Donna Thomas' book, "More Making Books by Hand", has instructions for making a scroll like this.
