For every stage, a different sponsor. Behind every beat, a different brand. This happened in early October. I was at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and I was at the limits of my patience. I hadn’t expected all of these corporate come-ons, so pervasive in other precincts, to be assaulting me here of all places.

If you’ve grown up in Austin you most likely will have heard the slogan “keep Austin weird” at least once over the years and that’s because it’s Austin’s unofficial motto but over the last two years as we’ve seen more companies relocate to here from California and other states many people are starting to wonder if Austin can still be considered to be “weird” like it was in the past and the answer is yes.

Murals at the intersection of Twelfth and Chicon on Austin’s East Side were painted over recently, while famous images in the city’s tourist neighborhoods have become institutions.
