Magic lantern projector

A fine, late Victorian mahogany and brass magic lantern by Perken & Son of Hatton Garden, London. This beautiful old projector was made under the ‘Optimus’ trademark which it registered in 1885. It would have been used for projecting glass magic lantern slides in days long before the advent of cinema.

1870 – Magic Lantern The Magic Lantern was use to shoe picture to the public. Using a candle with pictures printed on a glass images where projected on to a wall or white screen. Teacher start to use this tool to show picture to student what they will not see on their text book. This tool evolved to a film and then in the future to a digital using a computer and a projector. Where teacher could do more than they will have done before.

The magic lantern is what made the whole history of animation possible. A lantern is simply a projector- but back in the day, nobody really knew about moving pictures and how they were to be...

An antique magic lantern projector or laterna magica by John Wrench and Sons of London, the projector housed within a wooden transit case also housing a collection of antique glass lantern slides. This interesting item came from Bradford Corporation Transport, which operated the tram network in the Yorkshire city.
