Moana character design

bobbypontillas: Moana’s out in theaters today! After animation wrapped on Big Hero, I had the opportunity to help out with design on Moana. One of my assignments was to design the village kids from her island of Motunui. I hoped to bring a sense of authenticity to how they looked, and to make them real for me I thought a lot about watching my little cousins grow up back in the Philippines =) Thankful for them!

Moana's Brothers are nine cut characters from Disney's Moana. An early concept of Moana explains that her nine brothers sailed away from Motunui, leaving Moana Waialiki behind. It was then Moana's job to rescue them.[1] Another concept was a race between Moana and her brothers at the beginning of the film, in which she beat them. Brother #1: The leader, much like his father, Chief Tui. Brother #2: The warrior. Brother #3: The artist/dreamer, and whom Moana feels closest to. Brother #4…

"Moana facial expressions. It was very challenging to make her every expressions and attitudes look like a 14 year old girl. Drawing a girl is always much harder than drawing a male character at least for me."
