I first came across water culture for orchids about 5 years ago. My immediate reaction was horror. I’ve been growing orchids for over 30 years and the thing that kills more orchids than anything else is overwatering. Now people suggest submersing the roots in water full time – that’s crazy – or is it? Some ... Read More

Krystal Duran on Instagram: "Orchid are epiphytes. They grow on top of other plants and are not anchored in the soil. Epiphytes take up their nutrients from water, air, and debris around them.

Living in Indiana, fall and winter temperatures get less than 55 degrees consistently which would prevent us from being able to anchor orchids or other plants to trees so this will just have to do.

When choosing a board, choose one that is rot resistant. I used cork bark since it doesn’t rot but it’s also very easy to make holes in. It’s fairly plyable.

Hang in a spot that will get light, water the moss when it’s almost dry, and you can incorporate liquid orchid fertilizer in the water when blooms fall off.

Now we can live our orchid hanging dreams… inside 🌸

Krystal Duran on Instagram: "Just because it has no blooms, doesn’t mean it’s trash! 🥲

You’ll find many phalaenopsis orchids discounted once the blooms fall. It’s a perfect opportunity to give them a refresh and get them back to their full potential. When the blooms have died off, you can incorporate orchid fertilizer into the watering. These lived in front of a north facing window and I watered when roots were silvery instead of green.

HousePlantParadise on Instagram: "Your orchids aren’t afraid of a little water! Amazing tutorial by @_plantswithkrystal_ Growing orchids in water is so much fun! The trick is to ensure you don’t fill the container the entire way of water, just 1/3 and replace once a week. If your water evaporates throughout the week, don’t refill until it’s time to change what’s left of the water at the end of the week. Fridays are my usual changing of water for my plants I water and I remember to fertilize Orchids In Water Vase, Orchid In Water, Orchids In Water, Diy Plastic Bottle, Growing Orchids, End Of The Week, Diy Vase, In Water, Orchids
