Creation of a soothing, restorative home is on trend today. Charlotte designer Kim Mauney, founder of Kim Mauney Interiors and her boutique/studio Maison, riveted on just that formula when she downsized into a cozy Southern cottage home.

To build or not to build, that was the question. And a very difficult one for Anne Williams to answer as she contemplated building anew or renovating her family’s historic home in Dallas’ University Park neighborhood. As newlyweds, the interior designer and her husband purchased the house with the intention of staying there forever, but when the household of two multiplied, they inevitably needed more room to grow.

HGTV joins Southern style expert James Farmer on a tour of his latest masterpiece – which happens to be on a peach farm in South Carolina with a classic design scheme.

Sims and Mike Wachholz lived in their historic Jacksonville, Florida, house for two years before embarking on a major renovation. During that time, they absorbed the way light shifted through the rooms, the way their family used the spaces, and the impact color played throughout the house. Built in 1928 as a spec house, the Spanish Mission-style house went on to become a landmark on the street, one that longtime neighbors were happy to see getting a refresh.

When clients approached design firm Huff-Dewberry to decorate a new home for them, it was as if their careers had come full circle. The designers had worked for decades with the late Dan Carithers, another design luminary, who these same clients had used for decades. When Carithers retired, the clients made the natural progression to the young firm steeped in Carithers’s fresh take on traditional style.

While there are lots of reasons why you should shop for secondhand furniture, the most important may be its positive impact on the environment. “I recommend shopping for used furniture over new store-bought items because there is little to no ecological footprint,” says interior designer Rebecca Hay. “Plus, older furniture is usually built to last, while newer big box furnishings can break in a few years and end up in a landfill, contributing to greenhouse emissions.
