Pre as art on the cover of the June 1972 issue of Sports Digest. The issue came out before the US Olympic time trials in Eugene, Oregon, in July. Though the art work features the Olympic rings, Pre is depicted wearing the AAU's jersey for US athletes. The US Olympic jerseys were white with dark blue Olympic rings below the USA letters--they were not worn during the US Trials. Prefontaine is a junior at Marshfield High School, and he’s just finished his fourth and final lap of the mile, which he completed in 4:23.4. He has yet to grow his signature mustache, but his almost-smiling face and confidence is familiar.
