You asked, and I listened. Vintage Dancer now has new shopping comparison pages for vintage reproduction sewing patterns. I have handpicked sewing patterns for women and men by decade, based on common requests I have received, such as 1930s house dresses, vintage aprons, 1940s men's wide leg pants, 1910s swimsuits, and more. Most of the

I have made this long draped over-skirt several times, but too often I forget the rule I made for myself the last time: Don't use artificial fabric! I say that only because I had a bear of a time ironing the the seams flat…

Pattern: TV367 "1887 Cascade Over-skirt" *Skirt and bodice are heavily altered from other patterns Fabric: %100 Cotton print. Available on ebay HERE Firstly, let me say that I have made this pattern twice thus far, and both times I screwed it up. This is no fault of the pattern, but my own oversights. In this case, when I folded the pleats under on the back "tail" pieces, I folded them to far over, essentially making the tail piece several inches narrower than it should have been =(. The…

The Antique Sewist: 1870s Polonaise - Purple Ribbed Silk with Black Trim Polonaise Dress, 1870 Dress, Moth Costume, Truly Victorian, Victorian Bustle, Promenade Dress, Anniversary Outfit, Victorian Era Fashion, Clothes Furniture

I started with the Truly Victorian polonaise pattern as a base, but did some very heavy alterations. By the time I was done, the thing was practically a unique drafting. This is ribbed silk dupioni, two tone, with an embroidered black satin trim. The silk was a clearance table buy from JoAnns years ago, and the trim was a trade from a customer, so I have no idea where it came from.

Before the Automobile: 1880's hat and gloves Truly Victorian, Princess Line Dress, 17th Century Clothing, Victorian Bustle, 1880s Fashion, Victorian Gown, 19th Century Clothing, Victorian Corset, Glove Pattern

This summer I finally made the missing accessories to complete my 1887 style late bustle dress. The gloves are hand stitched from leather. I used my previous glove pattern with small adjustments to make them fit even better and lengthened them to cover all skin and reach under the 3/4 length sleeves. The hat was made using the adorable Truly Victorian TV551 pattern. It's a buckram frame hat covered with silk taffeta and decorated with feathers. I wanted it to look like a lady had walked in…

A week ago I finished my project sewing an 1880s style walking costume. I wanted to wait to show pictures until I could be photographed in it. However, we have been experiencing 100+ F degree weather here in The Big Valley of California. I am not putting all those layers on in that kind of heat for a photo shoot. Here is one of the pins I based my dress on. It can be found here. Of course it is a based on a period photo. I also based my dress on these drawings and examples: Bustle dress…

Sew Modern Sew Historical: Truly Victorian 1870s Day Bodice TV400, Tie Apron ... Truly Victorian, Tie Apron, Skirt Apron, Victorian Bustle, Victorian Skirt, Historical Sewing, Victorian Pattern, Costume Sewing Patterns, Bustle Dress

I needed a new bustle dress for a museum event in October. I was thinking about the 1870s AKA the early bustle era. At some point I had bought a butt load of some close out last chance sale plaid silk shantung. I figured I would make a full bustle dress out of it. Well, once it arrived I realized the primary colors (golds) were not something that works with my coloring. So I set it aside until I found some other colors that would work with it. A friend helped me choose a really pretty kelly…
