Country living and wildlife in Iceland

Iceland is "The Land of Ice and Fire". We are given beautiful landscapes with snowcapped mountains, active volcanoes, northern lights, and moss covered hills. By far, most of us live in the capital area of Reykjavik, but some of us are fortunate to live in the middle of stunning views. Exploring the country side, you will see cottages, farms, cabins, wood houses, and churches along with horses, birds, and blooming valleys.

One of Iceland's best kept secrets is undoubtedly the country's north-west corner, usually known as the Westfjords. Isolation has preserved the region in relatively unspoiled wilderness. Largely uninhabited, Iceland's Westfjords are frequently distinguished by travel guides as a destination of excellence, and are a must-see for any serious explorer. This is Holmavík, Westfjords, Iceland.

Tradition and heritage play a large role in the region's culture, and the strong relation to the ocean is evident in both the regional cuisine and folklore. The Westfjords are a true Icelandic wilderness, and undoubtedly the ideal place for spotting birds, arctic fox, and other unique fauna in their natural habitats. The aurora borealis if quite a stunning view, and the phenomena can best be seen in places outside the cities or capital area to avoid light pollution. Like here at this cosy cottage in the snow.
