How to Prune Lavender - never prune in fall or winter and never cut back to the ground. Prune in spring and early summer after first leaf buds emerge to cut out dead wood and then prune again just after flowers fade - deadhead and shape plants then, leave at least 3 - 5 leaf nods below each flower spike, when shaping, leave at least 5 obvious nodes above the ground where new growth can emerge
