Período: Clásico Tardío (550–900 d.C.).Cancuén, Sayaxché, Petén. The monarchs of the Classic period used a series of symbols to demonstrate their position and legitimize their right to direct the destinies of political entities. This jewel of jade represents the god Kawiil, protector deity of the rulers and symbol of royalty. In general, these elements were worn in the kings' headdress during public ceremonies. It was recovered during archaeological excavations in the royal palace of the city.
