13.5 in battlecruiser HMS Tiger, a veteran of Dogger Bank in 1915 and Jutland in 1916. Laid down as an evolution of the 'Lion' class, there was time to alter her layout to mimic that of the Japanese Kongo, then building in British yards: as a result her third turret, aft of the funnels rather than midships, had better firing arcs than her half-sisters. She stayed in service into the 1930s. London, Layout, Ww1 History, American War

HMS Polyphemus (1881)
HMS Polyphemus in a Malta Dockyard, 1881. As the only torpedo ram to serve in the Royal Navy, she was designed to penetrate harbours at speed, sinking ships at anchor. The central torpedo tube was fit with a steel bow cap which hinged upward - reinforced to be a ram. Interesting hydrodynamic effects were observed, being quite by accident one of the first bulbous bows. The ship found a place in the H. G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds. Chief Petty Officer
