Louis T's travel: Seeing Sri Lanka again, immersing into Colombo

My first visit to Sri Lanka was in August, two years back. After my trip I developed very fond memories of the beautiful country. I wasn’t sure if I would visit it again, and yet chance brought me back this May.

The flag-lowering ceremony is unique to the Galle Face Hotel. I heard different versions of when and how this ceremony got started at the hotel. The bagpiper dressed in a kilt, needless to say very Scottish, accompanied by the hotel concierge, comes to the flag, everyday at the precise moment of the sunset, and completes the flag-lowering while the piper plays his tune.

But regardless of the rather frightening waves, the west coast is one of the best spots for glorious sunsets. Sunset scenery at the Galle Face Hotel

This Galle Face Hotel is probably the oldest in Sri Lanka, and one of the oldest in the world. Having opened in 1864, the Grand Dame is now over 150 years old. The property is vast with 156 rooms in two wings, spread right alongside the coast. When I walked into the Galle Face Hotel, I felt I had walked back into Sri Lanka’s colonial era.

When walking on the Green, I saw a local man sitting on the grass and spotted something moving in his basket. It was a cobra! And a pretty big one! When the snake charmer started his music, the cobra indeed (like I’ve heard so many times in stories) began dancing to the tune. I snapped a shot and ran away, as I have to admit that I was too scared to figure out how and why the snake dances with the “magic” music.
