#NewYork based #Sculptor #DavidWeeks is known for creating #wooden toys and collectables that charm the young and old alike. #Hattie the #elephant is named after a real elephant that lived in Central Park Zoo. Like the other wooden #animals in Weeks' range, she is fully posable thanks to clever construction and rubber band ligaments. You can make her dance, run, sit or even do a handstand. Made from sustainable #beechwood. Available from @areaware.

While #KayBojesen originally trained as a silversmith under GeorgJensen, it's the #playful #wooden #toys that he is best known for. Puffins are known as 'sea parrots' in danish (#søpapegøje) due to their colourful beaks... #Bojesen's #Puffin beak features colourful stripes by #danish #painter Svend Johansen. Created in #1954, this #beechwood #bird was considered one of Bojsen's 'lost' #designs, until it was reintroduced in #2013 by @KayBojesen.

#Midcentury #scandinavian #designer #GunnarFlørning created the #SiameseCat for #Danish company #LauridsLønborg in #1958. The cat is his most #iconic #design, selling over 300,000 pieces across Europe, America and Japan in the 1950's and 60's. Unfortunately, Gunnar had to retire in 1965 due to developing a wood dust allergy. Lucky for us, this beloved #wooden #cat has nine lives, and has recently been re-released by @luciekaas

Some design is not just #beautiful... it's #foxy. This clever #fox is part of #JonathanAdler's #Menagerie collection of #ceramic #animals. Each animal is #designed by @jonathanadler his studio in #Soho, then taken to Peru where each piece is #handcrafted by skilled #artisans in their fairtrade workshop. This #sly guy is just at home in your garden as on your shelf and has brought #ceramics back into vogue for high end #designer wares.

The #RoyalLifeGuards (#DenKongeligeLivgarde) have watched over Demark's castles since 1658 - with their bearskin hats, red gala uniform and a cross on their fronts. The order was created by King Frederik III and serves two roles: as a front line combat unit, and as a guard/ceremonial unit to the Danish monarchy. #KayBojesen's #RoyalGuardsmen have watched over #Danish nurseries and living spaces since #1942. Like their live counterparts, they also serve two roles: as a living room…

From 1955-65 #GunnarFlørning was #Denmarks most successful #designer of #wooden #toys. Despite selling hundreds of thousands of pieces across both #Scandinavia and #Japan, #Flørning's work was largely forgotten during the seventies and would remain dormant for a generation until they were rediscovered and put into production once more. The #Pelican was created in #1959 and is one of several pieces which #Danish manufacturer, #LucieKaas has brought back to market. Some other reissued…

#Aarikka is a #Finnish family business that was founded in 1954 as a manufacturer of wooden buttons, and #Scandinavian wooden #designs. When looking at a box of #wooden beads, Kaija realised that the balls resembled curls, and the design for the #Pässi #Ram was born. Since its creation in #1973 it has become an #iconic piece of Finnish #design, and a popular business gift. The sheep has even ended up in the…

They say that #Elephants never forget, and fortunately thanks to global renewed interest, the works of #Danish #designer - Kay Bojesen have not been forgotten. #KayBojesen needs no introduction to the initiated. For those new to #modern #Scandinavian #design, #Bojesen was a #silversmith (of Georg Jensen lineage) who shifted professions, creating #wooden #toys when he first became a father. The #Elephant was created in #1953 when Kay's toy workshop was well established. As is the case…
