Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the New York City's subway system. We've dipped into our photo archive and pulled images of the early years; when entire city blocks were excavated, tunnels dug and the first tracks that connect New Yorkers 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year were laid.  Here, a workman caulks joints with lead to make them waterproof during the construction of the 6th Avenue subway tunnel in 1939.
