It took many years for Roy Lichtenstein to develop his own style. When he started a combination of cartoon characters from comic books with abstract backgrounds he said: “It occurred to me to do it by mimicking the cartoon style without the paint texture, calligraphic line, modulation—all the things involved in expressionism.” Thanks to this shift he eventually became a legend.
